Just because a president is 'commander-in-chief' doesn't mean that he can place the nation into war on his own judgment or whim. This is the very definition of absolute power. Congressional resolutions of support and funding are not a fit instrument in this regard. It enables politicians to say 'See, I voted to support the war' if it goes well, yet also claim 'Don't blame me, the president got us into this mess. I was merely supporting our troops!' if it goes poorly.
In my opinion, the Iraq War fails not only on constitutionality, but also on moral grounds. Where are those Weapons of Mass Destruction? What role did Iraq play in 911? What threat was Iraq to Kuwait this time around? The answer to all three questions is: 'NONE'.
Right now, behind the school where I work, Homeland Security has ordered a local business to man a guard box 24/7 to prevent people from walking on the beach. Their reason: the wharf that serves the Cook Inlet platforms might be a target of terrorists. Anyone walking their dog or heading for their fish site is violating Homeland Security orders.
Until terrorists show up on landing craft offshore, I think we need our beach back. A government that automatically distrusts its own people should be automatically distrusted by the people.
